Mission : Impossible 7’s Hayley Atwell Details Intense Training Process
Mission : Impossible 7 star Hayley Atwell explains her intense training process for the movie, including the amount of time she spent preparing.
Mission : Impossible 7 star Hayley Atwell details her intense training process for the film. The seventh Mission : Impossible movie is titled Mission : Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part I and will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie. McQuarrie also helmed the previous two Mission : Impossible films : Fallout in 2018 and Rogue Nation in 2015. Mission : Impossible 7 will star Atwell alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and long-time leading man Tom Cruise.
Though Mission : Impossible 7 will be Atwell’s first venture into the Mission : Impossible franchise, the actress is not new to the world of action-packed blockbusters. Atwell landed her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2011, playing Peggy Carter in Captain America : The First Avenger. After that performance, Atwell led her own spinoff series Agent Carter, which ran for two seasons from 2015-2016. She has also appeared as the character in Captain America : The Winter Soldier, Avengers : Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Avengers : Endgame, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and two episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, as well as voicing Peggy in Marvel’s animated series What If...?
Despite her extensive experience with the MCU, it seems even Atwell was taken aback by the scale of the training for Mission : Impossible 7. Fandom Spotlite uploaded a video from Atwell’s recent appearance at Awesome Con 2022. There, she detailed the intense process to prepare for the film’s stunts. This included direct work with an Olympic martial arts expert, who helped assess Atwell’s strengths to create Mission : Impossible 7 stunts that would highlight her abilities. Check out Atwell’s full quote below :
It blows my mind, every day on set going, what am I doing today ? What am I jumping off of ? So I trained for five months full time. I had an Olympic martial art expert who trained me every afternoon in mixed martial arts. So I was learning foundation techniques to work out where my natural sort of abilities lay to develop a fight sequence for my character that would be tailored to my own strengths.
Atwell’s training regimen delves into the fascinating behind-the-scenes world of the Mission : Impossible franchise. The series is known for its grand, realistic-looking action sequences that put actors in perilous situations as some perform their own stunts. Cruise, for one, famously goes beyond the limits of most mainstream stars. In Mission : Impossible - Rogue Nation, Cruise held his breath for six minutes, in addition to his famous stunt where he was suspended off the side of an airplane. Even if Atwell’s stunts in Mission : Impossible 7 don’t aim for this scale, her training was nonetheless intensive, and thoughtfully performed in order to work to the actress’s existing physical strengths.
While the first six films have set the bar high in terms of stunt work, Atwell’s intricate training bodes well for Mission : Impossible 7. Though other franchise films contain their fair share of suspenseful plots and appealing returning characters, stunt work is synonymous with the Mission : Impossible films. Though all of the Mission : Impossible 7 actors may not wind up dangling off of moving jet planes, others besides Cruise went through high-difficulty training periods in preparation for their roles. Atwell’s hard work will come to fruition when Mission : Impossible 7 finally hits theaters next year.
